The story of Abigail Adams is an interesting one, one of independence, precedence, and strength. Wife of the second President of the United States, Abigail Adams is an example of life lived by women in colonial and revolutionary America. While she is best known for the stance she took for women’s rights in letters to her husband. She was very self-educated and very knowledgeable in many subject areas including history, philosophy, and politics. Abigail Adams is historic figure because she opened people’s minds to women’s rights. Abigail Adams approach to the office of first lady was advanced in many ways, with her fame primarily resting on her thousands of letters. These letters help to describe her life and the important events that were happening during that time. Abigail and her husband exchanged over 1,100 letters to each other during their marriage. In March 1776, she vented in a letter to her husband, “I desire you would remember the ladies, and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors” (2014). She urges her husband, John Adams, and other members of the Continental Congress not to forget about the women of their country when fighting for America’s Independence from Great Britain.
