There are many characters in the book The Crucible that are to blame for the suffering of innocent people in Salem. Although there are many characters I believe Abigail Williams is the one to blame for the suffering of everyone for her faults. Abigail Williams is a girl who lives at a small town called Salem, in her uncle's house. She works as a house maid for her uncle to live under his roof. She starts to lie when Parris asks her why she was fired from the Proctor house on page 12 in the book The Crucible she states, ¨they want slaves, not such as I¨ although the truth is that she had feelings for John Proctor. Later on in the story Abigail tries to get rid of Elizabeth by explaining that she is also a witch in Salem. Abigail states, ¨she is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me!¨ on page 23-24 in the book The Crucible. Abigail started everything by black mailing the innocent children or girls from Salem to lie also so they don't get whipped. On page 20 she tells Mary Warren, ¨I say shut it, Mary Warren¨ when she said it was a ¨sin to conjure.¨ Since Abigail blackmails the girls to lie, many people will end up being killed in the village for witchcraft although they aren't involved in anything. Later in the story Abigail tells Mary Warren to give a poppet to Elizabeth Proctor which she uses later on to accuse her of witchcraft. On page 74 Cheever states, ¨and demandin' of her how she come to be so stabbed, she to proctor now testify it were your wife's familiar spirit pushed it
