Abigail Williams is the source of the witchcraft hysteria in Salem. Abigail is first accused of bewitching Betty Parris in the woods one night. She quickly disputes the accusation by saying they: Ruth Putnam, Tituba, Betty Parris, Mary Warren, and Abigail herself, were only dancing despite it also being highly looked down upon. By starting out with this single lie, her story snowballs and eventually leads to the downfall of Salem. By associating herself with Betty Parris and Ruth Putnam, both of which are sick while Abigail is well, Abigail is submitting herself to a fight she can’t win unless she lies.
Rather than seeing herself as a seventeen-year-old who took authority of one man’s heartache and doubt while his wife was sick, Abigail sees herself as John Proctor true lover. She believes that if she lies on Elizabeth to get rid of her that John will want to be with her in the end. Abigail is a young seventeen-year-old girl daydreaming about the optimal male. By all means, she reveals false information on a majority of the other characters. Throwing witchcraft unto everyone gives her all the authority and the power she wants because she has the judges and some of the people in the town in the palms of her hand.
Through harsh rejection and preposterous delusions, Abigail Williams abused her good name and became the fault for the bitter ends of many for something they were not guilty of. I have reread significant sections of The Crucible several times and have read and analyzed it to the best of my ability on multiple occasions. Once reading this book in my Honors English Course at the number one high school in the state of California, we carefully analyzed the characters, going as far as even making character charts, to understand them and their intentions much better. Abigail WIlliams, who is at fault for the Salem Witch Trials, held verbal power and influence over the girls which led to the sentenced hanging of many, and acted unwisely on the galling
In the story “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller, is a story that informs readers about the devastating salem witch trials that occurred in 1692 and 1693. One of the characters names is Abigail who is a seemingly nice girl until her true self comes out when she has an affair with a well known man named John Proctor. Abigail begins to accuse people of being witches and lies about having symptoms and seeing things due to people using “witchcraft”. Throughout the play people make sacrifices for what they think is right; and at the end, John Proctor made the biggest sacrifice of all. The Salem witch trials was a terrifying time for everybody involved and caused many deaths.
Abigail was able to influence the people around her which allowed her to be saved from death and she put the lives of other innocent civilians at risk. After the word traveled around how Reverend Parris’ had caught her niece, Abigail Williams, and daughter, Betty Parris, doing something along the lines of witchcraft and Abigail explained part of what had happened. Abigail had said that she admits to dancing in the woods with her friends while Tituba sang her Barbados songs and she also said that Tituba tried to conjure a spirit. As a result, she had blamed someone for her actions and began the witchcraft hysteria because she withheld information. Next, the character that is portrayed as manipulative and self-preserved, Abigail, knew that her omission wouldn’t save her for long which was why she threatened her friends that were with her that night.
As the author uses character description, character actions, and dialogue, toward Abigail he shows how he has a good demonstration of the theme and power that is directed toward Abigail Williams. The dialogue has shown how Abigail uses intimidation to scare her peers and control her peers into doing what she is telling them at the time, that moment. She threatens

In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Miller introduces the idea, apparent in today’s world, that sometimes people blame others to save themselves from punishment through the characters’ actions and the asides from Miller. The most prominent character that displays this theme is Abigail Williams. Several times Abigail pushes the blame on others when she senses trouble. When Parris finds the girls dancing in the forest, Abigail knows she has to do something to avoid punishment.
Abigail is willing to accuse any one in her path of witchcraft even if it means taking the lives of those close to her. Abigail Williams’ emotional desire guides her actions even if it conflicts with morality. Abigail williams is driven to do unthinkable things because of her love for John Proctor. Abigail Williams is a 17 year-old orphan who is currently living her uncle, Reverend Samuel Parris and his daughter and also her cousin Elizabeth Parris also known as Betty. In the play, it is revealed that she has been dancing in the woods with girls of Salem and performing voodoo with her uncle’s slave, Tituba. Dancing is a very big sin in Salem, dancing is one of the signs of witchcraft so when rumors of witchcraft begin to circulate through the town Abigail and Betty start naming people as witches in order to divert suspicion from themselves.
