First and Foremost, Abigail lied. She said she had seen a bird, but it was just a lie. Similarly, she was dancing in the woods with others, which was against the law at this time period. This started hysteria, because Abigail got really sick and no one knew what was wrong with her.
Out of all the characters in the book, there are many that contributed to the hysteria of the witch trials, however, of these characters Abigail Williams contributed the most. In the beginning of the play, we see Abigail and a collection of other girls dancing and making a charm in the woods. Abigail made this charm in order to kill Mr.Proctor 's wife. If Abigail wasn 't so crazy in love with John this scene in the woods probably wouldn 't have taken place. Therefor, Parris would have never caught the girls and there wouldn’t be rumours of witchcraft.
During the Salem Witch Trials a lot of people were accused of using witchcraft. As a result many people died for other people’s lies, rumors, and selfishness. There is one person that really caused and is most to blame for all the chaos, her name is Abigail. Abigail is to blame for all that has happened in the Witch Trials, the reason for that is because of all the accusing and lying she has done. In addition, it all leads up to her for instance, she used a doll to accuse people of witchcraft.
For example, she lied to her uncle about dancing in the woods claiming it was only sport. She also lied about her name stating it be clear as ever although she slept with John Proctor. During court, she lied about Mary Warren being a bird. Her lies often caused events to escalate quickly. Thus showing her lies contributed to the witchcraft hysteria.

She manipulated the other convicted girls so she wouldn't be the only one to convince the court. The girls had no choice but to follow abigail because they knew the things she can come up with and were scared of that. In the court Abigail pretended to be possessed and collapsed to the floor and the other girls did the same. She deceived the whole court with this act, a clever tactic on her
Some people use lies to cover up or solve problems. Abigail feared being accused of witchcraft, so she accused others of witchcraft. She tried to use lies to solve her problems, but ended up creating a worse situation. Abigail’s lies had affected many of the characters.

She not only forces the girls to lie but forces herself too. On the other hand some, more than others, do think that Abigail Williams is nothing but an innocent girl or child. These might have created this opinion based off of her past filled with great trauma and tragedy. She witnessed her parents being murdered with her own two eyes and at such a young age.
The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a play which contains a multitude of complex characters . In the play, the characters’ motivations and inner processes are explored. Because of the historical setting, the characters live in a society of judgement and extreme religious devotion. This is a factor that places any of the characters’ choices and morals in a public balance to be judged by others. Abigail Williams is the main character of the play and acts with an utter selfishness and obsession.
A dynamic character like Abigail has lied before in the past and now has experiences something more sinister which is unique for a character in the story and makes the plot better with Abigail’s wickedness. Through the Trials of the Salem, the story will always have a person that will stand out when it is mentioned, and Abigail Williams takes the cake of being the most horrific, yet a great character in the story because it isn’t The Crucible without Abigail as being the antagonist and the tension builder. Abigail Williams was the main cause of Salem witch trials because Abigail was the first person to start accusing innocent people of witchcraft. Due to young Abigail actions, 20 innocent people took the calling of death for her actions. how many People do you know willing to lie and cheat the rules to get anything they want .? The fact that twenty people died all because of Abigail craving attention and wanting her own personal gain from accusing others of having spoken with the devil or witchery is insane. I blame Abigail for anything that has happened during the witch trials of Salem.
