America has built one of the most sophisticated societies in the world. Our nation is built on laws that were created to be equal to all its citizens. However, the inception of America had a shameful past which would haunt it to this very day. The laws that were created to protect and provide equality to its citizens would exclude an entire race of people. Slavery would become embedded in the framework of America. Even though there were people in America who wanted to abolish slavery due to a moral obligation, slavery was able to persist in the United States because it provided the formation of the Constitution which allowed for future expansion and economic growth of a powerful nation. Slavery existed in the New World before the conception of the Constitution. Slavery would become a crucial part in forming the Constitution. Slavery played a major role in performing the necessary labor to produce those goods. Dattel writes “the cotton empire of the nineteenth century became a truly integrated national and international operation, perhaps the first complex global business.” The resources of the land and free labor by slaves advanced the economic standing of America.
