The Age of Reform changed life for many people, including slaves. Abolitionism and public education were just two of seven major reform movements. Life after the reform was very different from what Americans were used to. Slaves have been apart of the America since the beginning, but as time went on, America began to gain many slaves. The Abolitionist movement was a movement to stop slavery in a nation that valued personal freedom and believed “all men are created equal.” As states started to gain more slaves, many became rich from slaves especially in the New England area. Many children were too poor to receive education, American citizens wanted there to be education for everyone. If you were rich, your parents would either send you to a private school or hire a private tutor to come to your house, but education was different for people living on the frontier. Frontier kids would attend school with 60 or more kids in one room and teachers didn’t receive the money they were granted. During this time, most children didn’t really go to school because of how poor they were. Kids, who lived in cities and didn’t go to school, would cause all kinds of trouble; they would steal many things, destroyed properties, and set fires in different areas. From all these causes, American citizens decided to vote to raise taxes to build better schools, pay teachers higher salaries, and to establish special training school for teachers. By the mid-1800s, most states had accepted three basic principles of public education, that school should be free and supported by taxes, that teachers should be trained, and that children are required to attend school. One similarity is that both movements had arguments and opinions on them both; weather it was having no slaves or no education for poor people, they had quite the arguments. Another similarity is there effort to make everything equal, slaves wanted to be equal to us and most people wanted an equal education and school for everyone. The last similarity is that they both had huge events leading to the end of the movement, for example the underground railroad was a huge event that led to slaves being free and voting to pay taxes for a better school and more educated teachers led up to everyone being able to go to school. The one movement that made the most impact in America would be the public education movement. This movement made it so everyone, no matter how poor or wealthy they are, could have an education and go to school. This movement has made the most impact because more schools have been created which made it so more people could attend school on a regular day basis. After the abolitionist movement, many colored people had to deal with people judging them and being rude to them.
