Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass were both heroic, not only because of their brave actions, but because of their personal sacrifices for the benefit of others. Despite winning the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln wanted to preserve the United States as a unified country. Instead of vengeance, and victory, he preached forgiveness. He did not want personal glory, he wanted liberty for the people. Unfortunately, he died right before he could see the country reunited.
Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass were heroic men who fought for freedom and liberty. Abraham Lincoln was heroic because during the Civil War he was fighting to keep the union together, for freedom, and liberty. In a sermon for Lincoln’s funeral Phineas D. Gurley stated that; “ He is dead; but the cause he so ardently loved… not for himself only, not for us, but for all people in their coming generations, till time shall be no more-that cause survives his fall, and will survive it”(SB, p. 68). The Emancipation Proclamation officially granted freedom to slaves in rebellious states once, and if only, recaptured on January 1, 1863. Lincoln used the Emancipation Proclamation as a war tactic to suppress the Confederacy and ensure border state loyalty. Lincoln’s concern of losing key border states, hindered full and immediate abolition in the Union. Lincoln restrained from emancipation because of its constitution right, but progression into the second year of war opted for change. If the Confederacy did not surrender by New Year’s Day and the Union won the war, then no opposition would be met against the proclamation.

Although it may have been to “preserve the Union”, the underlying problem of the war - a problem that had been simmering for years - was slavery. Lincoln had been cautious at the beginning of the war to not upset the border states, but near the end he added the emancipation of slaves to the Union’s war goals. Part of the reason that the North won the Civil War was due to the number of resources that they produced, the release of the Emancipation Proclamation, and military leadership.

Although this is true, my definition of a 'hero ' is someone who does something dangerous or brave to save another. Someone who just doesn 't get themselves out of a situation, but they also reach out and try to save the others.
