Civil War: Was Abraham Lincoln A Hero Or Hero?

I wonder, do all heroes wear capes? I don’t know. But one prime example of being a hero and not having a cape is Abraham Lincoln, the President during the most bloody and costly war for the U.S, the Civil War. He started out as an Illinois farmer, and rose to president. Because Abraham Lincoln fought for the ending of slavery and the uniting of the U.S, as well as persevering through threats on his life, he is deserving of hero status.

Although most people would disagree with the idea of war, many also agree he wouldn’t have been able to peacefully end the keeping of slaves. In other words, war is usually the barbaric answer to a disagreement, but it was necessary on this occasion. Additionally, he was supported by the majority of the U.S, whether that be slaves or other forward thinking whites.

He also had to persevere through a lot of disagreements. In all 4 years of the Civil War, people tried to convince him that the slaves didn’t matter enough to sacrifice so much for them. He also had to persevere through countless death threats from Confederate loyalists. He died to uplift blacks from slavery, and if that isn’t altruism, they might need to work on the definition a little.

Despite all this, many people still label Lincoln as a bad guy. A group of people believe he did it just to be controlling and super empowered(Debate.org). They also believe he was a tyrant because he suspended habeas corpus and didn’t allow the South to secede like we tried to secede from Great Britain. What they don’t recognize is the fact that he did it to keep an entire race from becoming little more than beasts of burden for the Southern states.
