The most important thing about Abraham Lincoln is that during the civil war is that he was the president of the Union at the time. Abraham Lincoln chooses to fight not because of his feelings towards slavery but he felt it was his “duty as president of the United States”(battlefield.org). This shows that Abraham Lincoln put his country before himself. When Lincoln won the presidency in 1860 it was one of the “primary reasons” on why the war started (battlefield.org). Lincoln wins the election was a big hit on the Confederacy because they didn't even know he was in the election. Lincoln wrote an appeal to the south states even the ones that have already re-joined the nation, his initial draft ended with “shall it be peace or the sword?” (battlefield.org).
