Abraham Lincoln, looking back, seems like an integral person to America and its history. People today may believe that, but it was actually surprisingly difficult for Lincoln to win his reelection. There were many factors contributing to this uncertainty, one of them being his support of emancipation for slaves. According to USHistory.org, the Democratic Party was split right down the middle about their hopes for the war. Half of the democrats were extremely dead-set on ending the war with a peace treaty, and the other half wanted to continue the fight ("The Election of 1864").
After being elected again he leads the U.S into the battle of Gettysburg which was a huge turnaround for the Union, and basically summed up and ended the war, with the Union on top. Many just remember Lincoln for his successful times in the Civil War, but towering over most in height and being successful, being at 6”4 and very successful in his young life before the war. Even though he was born into a rural poor family, he found a way to get to school and grow up to be one of the most memorable presidents. Lincoln was born in Kentucky, and grew up with an average education as pointed out above. At the age of 9 years old he lost his mother Nancy who died of an untreatable illness called Milk disease.
During the Civil War, President Lincoln and his associates began to plan the Reconstruction of the Union. Problems Lincoln faced were how to reintegrate the conquered southern states back into the Union and what was to be done with the Confederate leaders and the freed slaves. After General Lee surrendered, Lincoln was asked by one of his Generals how the defeated Confederates should be treated, and Lincoln replied, “Let em up easy.” (Thomas, 2008) In keeping with that theme, Lincoln led the moderates regarding Reconstruction policy.

For the previous eight years before Lincoln came into office, Pierce and Buchanan were the president and felt that slavery should be upheld in the south, much to the disapproval of the free-soil party, later to become the Republican Party. He was the commander-in-chief of the american military. Abe risked his life in a battle while fulfilling his duty, which in my opinion was an admirable position as a president. He came under confederate fire, not many presidents would risk their lives. Lincoln was the second to do so and he led the union to victory while ending slavery. Lincoln took a huge risk to accomplish this freedom to end slavery.
