Many Americans know about the part Abraham Lincoln played in the Civil War, however many are truly unaware how integral Lincoln was to the Civil War and its outcome. The most common consensus regarding the conflict is that the Civil War was about slavery, and it was a major factor, but for Lincoln it was about keeping the country united. Abraham Lincoln was cognoscente of successful strategies that became turning points in the Civil War. His knowledge of the law, strategic planning, and ultimately appointing Ulysses S. Grant as leader of the Northern troops, all contributed to the Union victory. Lincoln had the foresight to realize that, although the Northern conviction was for freedom of the slaves, many Americans were not truly ready for
