Lincoln is known for many things, including his leadership during the Civil War, his Emancipation Proclamation, and his Gettysburg Address. When Lincoln became president in 1861, the country was on the brink of war. He was faced with the challenge of keeping the Union together and ending slavery. Lincoln was a master strategist and was able to navigate the complexities of the war. He tasked General Ulysses S. Grant to lead the Union army and together they were able to defeat the Confederacy. Lincoln's words continue to inspire Americans to this day and the Gettysburg Address is considered one of the greatest speeches in American history.
