Lincoln didn’t go to school often because he had to support his family. He moved to Southern Illinois in 1830 with his family, and Lincoln worked on a river flatboat hauling freight sown the Mississippi to New Orleans when living in Southern Illinois. After moving to Salem, Illinois he got jobs as a shopkeeper and a postmaster.
