In the 1930s, the United States was going through the Great Depression and many Americans were unemployed. The Federal Art Project, a branch of the FDR’s Works Project Association, had a small group that was devoted to poster design and this resulted in the US government being the proiment patron of cutting edge graphic design in the 1930s. FAP posters were seen by a larger audience than Vogue or Vanity Fair. Silkscreening was less expensive than lithography, and silkscreen increased the output of the number of posters printed. The FAP posters woke up the American public about the beauty of Art Deco abstraction.

Several of our readings so far this term have discussed the evolution of art, particularly during the 1960’s and 1970’s. At this time, art was under going a dramatic shift, leaving the conventional behind and creating a rebellious new form of avant garde art.
