1930s Art Imagine waking up one day and being in the 30’s. Everything would be completely different. The music, the fashion, the technology, even the arts would be very different. All things, big or small, changed for one reason or another. In the 1930s The Great Depression and Dust Bowl greatly affected the art in America. In fact, the Great Depression, and Dust Bowl, hit the hardest in the 30s. By the year 1933, the number of unemployed Americans was around 13 to 15 million citizens due to the Great Depression. In addition to the stock market troubles, the Great Plains region was going through the worst drought they have ever faced. Over 2.5 million citizens affected by the Dust Bowl had left the region, with nearly 10 percent moving to California. This decade had many tragedies occurring, causing many changes to American society. Indeed there are numerous forms of art, some became more well known than others. The doorstep portrait become very popular during this time. This was where a person, or people, would stand in front of their door or somewhere on their porch. People would take doorstep portraits which showed just how little they had, yet they were thankful for it. Some people lost everything, but the one’s who still had something were happy to have what little they were left with. The looks of America itself changed. Artists began painting the scenery, which showed just how tough it was on farmers. Their lands became dry and very tough to work with. Though they were based on the tough times, the arts of the 1930s were utterly remarkable. From the paintings being made, to the pictures taken, things were changing. Little by little artists and photographers such as Thomas Hart Benton, Grant Wood, Walker Evans, and Dorothea Lange were changing the way art was
