Due to the increase of technology, it has become increasingly easy for students to bully each other on social media or by e-mail. This new method of communication allows students to make fun and belittle others anonymously, behind a computer screen. Cyberbullying has become increasingly prominent at local schools but despite the disruptions it may cause, schools should not be allowed to limit online speech. Cyberbullying does not affect the majority of people, it is not the most terrible offense and it happens oftentimes outside of school.
Cyberbullying is becoming more typical, especially among teenagers, and this has raised questions about how to prevent bullying from occurring. The schools want to maintain a safe environment for learning, one of the questions being asked is “Should schools be allowed to limit students’ online speech?.” This is the wrong way to pursue the bullying crisis*. Limiting online speech violates our* constitutional rights, students are not the only ones being bullied/ being the bullies, and this is just a method of communication. Limiting online speech could take away what little voice teenagers have, your words are powerful.
Social media has become a controversial topic over the recent years. There is a disagreement between people in whether social media can be a good thing or a bad thing to those who use it. Whether it can help or hurt people. Kennis Cady was a twelve year old girl from my hometown who committed suicide because of social media. The things that were said to her and about her over social media became a factor in Cady’s death.
Cyberbullying is a huge problem in the United States, that happens everyday. Cyberbullying is the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature. It affects many people in a negative way and it has to be controlled. In order to do this, schools should be allowed to limit students’ online speech because it affects people's lives and distracts everyone in a school environment. Bullying others through a screen can affect people’s lives mentally, physically, and emotionally.
McClatchy writes for a national newspaper in Minnesota and is currently drawing attention to cyber bullying. She explores new methods to combat this new type of bullying, which is derived from the internet. This article provides examples on several solutions that have been employed by different states to resolve the issue. Many state governments have come up with new laws requiring schools to construct policies to counter cyber bullying. The article also quotes a professor from John Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public health; he states that the increased usage and reliance on the Internet and smartphones will have a big impact towards cyber bullying.
Online it is so easy to bully someone without getting into trouble for doing it, this is why more bullying happens online than in person. This issue affects everyone being bullied, and it can happen to anyone. Cyberbullying is a big problem and needs to be solved, online speech should be limited because cyberbullying happens to so many people, it could help stop harassment, and it could help more people get involved. There is so much anonymity online which makes it difficult for cyberbullying to stop. From personal experience, I have been cyberbullied on social media websites like Youtube. People commented hurtful things on my videos, I was fifteen at the time, so I did not tell my parents.

This study proved that given the amount of time that adolescents are on computers unsupervised whether it be at home or in public libraries those who cyberbully are most often the ones that were prior victims to cyberbullying themselves. The constant messages are having a harmful effect on the student’s well-being, and they are trapped in a never-ending loop of bullying.
