I agree with the Marymount’s Academic Integrity Policy and procedures. The Office of Student Conduct and Academic Integrity has set up rules and procedures that is fair and “balances the needs of the individual students with the needs of the Marymount University community,” (Marymount University Community Standards). There are four principles used to make sure their goal for the students and the community is achieved. And they are: prevention, intervention, hard reduction and retention. Prevention is about educating the students about the standards at Marymount University before the matter in question takes place.
Honor codes are an important and controversial topics on the universities on America. Many professor and students defend honor codes, by saying that are creating a culture of trust, and are they are also created to stop plagiarisms. Professional environments such as jobs, school, or other organizations all share a common characteristic, each of which having their own sets of rules and regulations; among these could include something called an honor code, which is meant to be a promise to abide by certain rules, typically cheating in an academic setting. A lot of people want to believe that the honor code is taken seriously by at least most people, but the fact of the matter is that little to nothing is enforcing these “promises of honesty”. While many colleges implement honor codes as a means of ensuring academic integrity, it has proven to be ineffective and quite contradictory for a variety of reasons. Not so long ago, the honor code system was brought up to the U.S. Senate whether if it’s best to have it input schools to lessen cheating behaviors from students. It was not welcomed at first for those that were against the honor codes and as well of the people in the Senate. Even though after all the revisions and such, some voted to agree to have the codes set in place that would be good enough to have around in school; albeit honor codes don’t always work around schools, and cheating or some type of academic dishonesty will always happen— it’s inevitable. It seems by having these honor codes set in place, it would oppose the cheating and consequences against students. As the ones who have voted for the honor code wanted that safe, confidential, and knowing that their hard work and knowledge wasn’t used against them.
Cheating, plagiarizing, and taking credit for another’s work is usually frowned upon, but the honor code was created to prevent these acts from occurring. Honor codes are different from school to school and are commonly not followed. The honor system was created to convey that when you lie about accomplishing something yourself, you will be penalized for it. Honor code systems should be revised because of the lack of student involvement, the lack of confidentiality, and the burdensome consequences. To begin with, student involvement plays a huge role on campuses.
An honor code can be so effective that “many schools with academic honor codes allow students to take their exams without proctors present, relying on peer monitoring to control cheating” (Source F). Despite this system, there is research that “indicates that the significantly lower levels cheating” (Source F) at schools with honor codes. This is possible because there is a peer culture that denounces cheating, making kids embarrassed to commit academic dishonesty. Such a peer culture was formed by educating the students about the value of academic dishonesty.
Discussion: I think the hardest plagiarism to avoid is paraphrasing. The reason I think paraphrasing is the hardest is because sometimes its hard to paraphrase someone's else's work without saying just about everything that they stated without getting your point across to your professor. In the academic integrity video I failed the paraphrasing section and I believe I failed that section because I paraphrased the paragraph wrong, by saying wrong I mean I don't think I put my words together well enough stating what the author said properly. By me not paraphrasing it properly I failed , so that let me know that when writing papers this term I need to work on my paraphrasing a lot.
? After completing the Academic Integrity Tutorial the results highlighted and confirmed the area I struggle with the most is in paraphrasing an author's words. I know what plagiarism is and how to recognize it, but when practicing paraphrasing my response is lacking compared to the example given within the tutorial. It is difficult for me to not be guilty of “plagiapharsing”, or to just rearrange the author’s words into a different combination (Bethel University, 2014). In order to avoid this I first need to practice paraphrasing, to read the author’s words and to take note of the most important facts.
“Since “everyone else” is cheating, they have no choice but to do the same to remain competitive. And there is growing evidence many students take these habits with them to college.” (McCabe, Donald and Pavela). More and more colleges are using the honor codes. The honor code has helped to prevent cheating.

Academic integrity needs to be taken much more serious than it is. It plays a very important role in who you are as a college student and your direct learning of the material. Personal and academic integrity are important to me because they reflect who I am and how serious I take my education. I believe that academic integrity and personal integrity go fairly hand in hand because if you have personal integrity it flows over into your academic life too. Those who hold themselves accountable for their personal integrity know that their education is a part of their personal life too therefore both hold substantial importance.
Academic integrity gets a lot of attention in institutions of higher education(Mchaney). Students in higher grades know it’s not the smartest thing not to cheat. They know the consequences of committing plagiarism. Quick and easy access to this information leads some students to cheat(Peters). With temptations at the press of a key there’s no way they couldn’t copy and paste.
I would define integrity as someone who is honest in all things that they do. I think it can also mean doing the right thing when no one is looking. For example, if students were in the middle of taking a test and one student pulled out his phone to look up the answers to the test than that student does not have academic integrity, but if all the other students remain working on their test and do not cheat they are essentially proving that they have academic integrity. I would demonstrate academic integrity by completing all of my work and making sure it is either in my own words or that I have cited all the appropriate sources necessary if I used thoughts and ideas from someone else’s work.
