Chapter nine is titled Accepting Death, Affirming Life. The chapter starts out by saying that God gave us the commandments in a way that we are to live by them. In the Catholic faith we have the Ten Commandments that we abide by in our daily lives. These commandments teach us what is wrong and give us an aspect of what not to do. They lay down the rules for us to live by. Chapter nine then continues on by telling a story. Dov. Baer was a famous preacher that later became a key figure in the founding of Hasidism in the Jewish religion. He was leaving the synagogue and wanted to get home without anyone inviting him into their house for the Passover meal. He snuck out of the synagogue and went back to his house. Baer didn’t know the man before that night. The man was a wealthy real estate agent that heard rumors about Baer and his respect towards the faith. The man knew Baer was poor so he brought everything they would have needed for the meal. Baer asked the man how he could ever repay him and the man simply asked if Baer could pray to God to give the man and his wife a child. Baer responded simply by saying that by this time next year you will have a child. It turns out this was a dream that Baer had and it made him realize that this was his time to start serving God. I think that everyone eventually reaches a day where they realize that they need to give their life to God and start serving God. Everyone reaches that day at a different time in their life. Some may reach it at a young age while others may not reach it until the day before they die. I can tell you that I have not yet lived through this day. I do live under God’s name but I don’t necessarily give my life to God. I do want to get to this point one day though. I feel like when you live like that, you appreciate everything so much more.
