I have never been in a room with so many desperate people. There were people desperate to stay sober because they have just begun their path to sobriety. There were people who were desperate to keep the life that they are living because AA meetings have shown them that life is worth living and they are just starting to feel that they are worthy of that new life. There were also people that have been sober for a very long time (25 years) and still attending meetings. I have always wanted to help people and to help them better their lives, but I never could figure out how I could make that passion a reality, until the day I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety at age eleven. After that rough period in life, I learned how I could help other people. I could listen to them and try to help them better understand themselves. Life is much easier for a person when they have people who believe in them like a psychologist or therapist. My college plan would be to earn a bachelor, and master degree in Psychology to become a Behavior Analyst.

There is not a precise success rate available, considering that many of the results are released by AA and change based on various factors. Due to the anonymity of the AA program, many of its participants don’t partake in the studies conducted because it could break the anonymousness of the program. Especially if the participants attending the meetings to do not admit to relapsing. Additionally, the individuals who attend the meetings change regularly because people are constantly dropping out, at times after only a few meetings. In fact, 40 percent of participants drop out of AA after the first few meetings (Scientific American, 2011).

My idea of what AA meetings are like was largely shaped by the portrayal in movies and sitcoms as people sitting in a circle of chairs in a church room or an empty gymnasium, crying as they take turns oversharing their tragic circumstances. I assumed both NA and AA would be religious in their approach to recovery based on what I knew the 12 steps were. However, from knowing people who have attended AA before, I knew the movie representation of these meetings was dramatized and I was interested in gaining my own experience. I was inspired to explore this project and wanted to better understand both AA and NA meetings, so I attended one of each.
