The ACA standard also focuses on ethical issues in technology, online counseling, and social media. Another focus is on the imposition of counselor values on whether referrals should be made because of the counselor’s religious or other values. The ACA standards clarify that referrals are made only based on skill-based competency, not personal values. The ACA was more specific in stating the values of the counseling profession in the introduction; the enhancement of human development, diversity, and multiculturalism, social justice, the integrity of the counselor-client relationship and
Over the last few years, there has also been a significant increase in the severity of presenting concerns for college counseling center clients (Watkins, Hunt, & Eisenberg, 2012). While primary concerns such as depression and anxiety are on the rise in counseling centers, they are coupled with a surge of complaints of more serious mental health issues (Benton, Robertson,
Edmonds Community College and it’s employees operate many caring and unique academic and student support programs to help students to “be successful” in college courses, obtain gainful employment and transferring to universities, but in the past, Edmonds has been too busy doing the tasks involved in running programs to carefully assess and describe the powerful effectiveness of its programs. Every day, I come to work thinking of ways to improve how students gain access to information about attending college, complete a degree or certificate and secure employment or transfer to a university. I have earned two graduate degrees in School Counseling and Community Counseling. My entire professional career has been dedicated to improving the lives of people through education. In addition to my enthusiasm for working with students and the public, I am interested in collecting information and reporting on institutional processes to inform improvements in outcomes for students such as the accessibility of information, communication from college programs, fuller utilization of support programs by students and

I am writing in support of Stephanie McGuire-Wise for the ACES Supervision Award. Mrs. McGuire-Wise is my clinical supervisor at The University of Toledo’s Counseling Center. She is an excellent clinical supervisor and a kind, generous person who is devoted to her clients and supervisees. In supervision, Mrs. McGuire-Wise always provides useful feedback regarding my counseling skills, challenges me to accurately perceive the thoughts, feelings, and goals of my clients and myself; and is open to my input and feedback about the counseling sessions. She is very collaborative during the supervision process and this helps me to identify themes and patterns for my clients, create and implement appropriate goals for my clients, and apply interventions and techniques to help my client achieve their goals.
Section 1: Professional Development Plan For most of my life I have been motivated to help people so when I made the decision to continue my education at Walden University, I knew that I was ready for the journey. I am currently seeking a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and I am expected to graduate in the winter of 2025. This paper was written on June 30th, 2023, with the intent of further understanding my motivations for seeking this degree as well as visualizing the type of counselor I want to be in the future. Throughout this paper, I also discuss what is expected of me throughout my degree program, counseling career, and overall professional development.
American Counseling Association (ACA) stated that ‘Counseling is a professional relationship that empowers individuals, families and groups to accomplish mental health, education and career goals.’ Most of the people will face a lot of encounters throughout their life which need some inspiration, advice, support or counseling. Counselor is a person that trained to help the people who need help in their problem and focus them on healing. Psychology has several career options, each with educational and professional requirements. Two distinct paths within the field are Administrative Assistant and the more specialized areas of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy. To navigate these differences effectively, students pursuing a career in psychology must understand the educational requirements and professional responsibilities of different paths within the field to make informed decisions about their future endeavors. Although each career path presents its rewards and challenges, all contribute importantly to the societal support structures within different working environments. Turning our focus to the administrative assistant career is a dynamic and diverse field that requires
Issues regarding mental health have become more important than ever before because people are exposed to more stressors in life (“Become a Mental Health Counselor - 15 Must-Know Pros & Cons”). The solution starts with mental health counselors and psychologists. To further appreciate careers in counseling, one must first understand the education/training, salary/advancements, and benefits/hazards that go along with the job. Primarily, one of the most important factors in a job in counseling is the education and training required. If one chooses a career path in counseling, one first would need to obtain a two-year associate's degree while attending a junior college (“Career Outlook For Counselors”).
Counseling is a broad profession, for example the skills needed to for addiction counselling are different than the skills needed for family counselling, or school counselling. The American Counseling Association (ACA) has 19 divisions, each specializing in a different field of counseling. The ACA identifies different branches of counseling to “enhance professional identity” (ACA, 2023). Therefore, the specific division that counselor specializes in is part of their professional
My educational goal to pursue a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a specialization in Trauma and Crisis Counseling is a result of my personal life experiences and my admiration for those who work in this field, dedicated to helping those who may feel dragged down by toxic cycles and heavy memories, like myself once did, to create a life filled with meaning. As a Sociology major in my undergraduate career, I’ve always been interested in other people and why they operate the way that they do. It wasn’t long after earning my bachelors that I came to the belief that my past experiences and mental health journey could become my superpower to help others, and that if I wish for society to collectively feel better, then the focus on
My growing desire to become a counselor can only be exceeded by the growing need for dedicated and competent clinical mental health counselors in today’s managed care setting. I firmly believe the advancement of our society has fundamentally changed the managed care landscape. As an intern at Hudson Partnership Care Management Organization (CMO), I service children and adolescents that have multiple and complex emotional and behavioral health challenges. As a public health educator intern, my job is to help these children live happy, healthy and productive lives by providing families and the child with programs to help the children stay out of trouble and many in-house programs to help control the individual emotional or behavioral challenges.
I can vividly remember the advice given to me by my high school counselor. I was broken down, whispering to myself that I was not college bound. It was my counselor who made me realize that persistence was a key factor to continuing my education. The wisdom that was shared to me that day was instilled into my mind and was endorsed in my heart. I want to be the person that gives a glimpse of hope to students that need an extra push through education, just like it was given to me.
The Student Counseling Center at the University of South Dakota strives to help make the most of the college students’ years. The college years can be filled with new exciting experiences, but can also present challenges that may interfere with the academic and emotional well-being of the student. The overall goal is to increase more effective means of therapy to student and staff in order to promote resilience and enhance the well-being of students served on the campus of the University of South Dakota. My reason for perusing graduate studies in this field is the growing passion I have for counseling. Growing up with a mentally ill mother wasn’t easy and caused me to harbor a lot of emotions, which I carried with me throughout my adult life. It was through counseling that I learned how to express with my feelings instead of suppressing them. Counseling has helped me become emotionally healthy. Majority of people I encounter are ignorant to the importance
