Chemistry of Acesulfame-potassium
Acesulfame-potassium also known as acesulfame K or Ace K. The molecular mass of it is 202.245 g/mol. Its chemical name is Potassium 6-methyl-4-oxo-4H-1,2,3-oxathiazin-3-ide 2,2-dioxide. [1] It also have a pH value of 6.5-7.5, having a melting point of 229-232 °C and it is soluble in water. Ace K is a white odorless, free flowing crystalline powder. The process of making acesulfame-potassium involves transformation of acetoacetic acid, an organic intermediate. [1] Then, it is combine with others natural occurring mineral such as potassium. The Acesulfame-potassium has a similar chemical structure to saccharin. Acesulfame- potassium is 200times sweeter than sugar, it has been use in countless …show more content…

The general population exposed to the acesulfame potassium through ingestion of contaminated drinking water as well as ingestion of consumer product which contain this material. [3] The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has estimated the cumulative estimated daily intake of acesulfame potassium is 313mg per day. [4]

Health Effects of Acute / Single Exposure
Swallowed
Even swallowed acesulfame potassium does not have thought to produce harmful effects to the individual, but it might damage the pre-existing organ which included kidney and liver. It is also be considered an unlikely route of entry in commercial or industrial environments. The chances after swallowing acute potassium is significantly low, as vomiting will usually occurs and the renal excretion will increase in speed. Besides, the acute potassium in acesulfame potassium will decrease the blood pressure, cause the pulse which is slow and weak, heart rhythm irregularities and heart block as well.
The wat to reduce the discomfort is drink plenty of water after misconsumption of ace K. …show more content…

The methylene chloride is used widely in industries, but is not permitted in food industry. As the long association of methylene chloride can causes headache, liver complication and even renal disease.
Those who suffering diabetes will tend to consume the artificial sweeteners such as Ace K but they refrain to consume sugar. [6] However, the acesulfame potassium can stimulate the secretion of insulin and even can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) happen. The body will secrete more insulin than required amount, the intense desire of having sweet food will increases. [7] This will causes the individual lose their appetite.
Besides, consuming acesulfame potassium in long term will apparently produces tumors in breast, lung and even thymus gland. There are also some forms of leukemia and chronic respiratory disease in rodent
