Achilles: A Greek Hero

219 Words1 Pages
There were many Greek heroes known for all of their conquests. Achilles was the son of a king and nymph and was known as the finest warrior of the Agamemnon army. As a young child, his mother, Thetis, dipped Achilles in the River Styx which made him invulnerable in battle. She held him by his heel to dip him in the water which left that heel vulnerable. This is referred to as the “Achilles’ heel.” His father, Peleus, would later be informed of an oracle about Achilles and his impending death. The message was that Achilles would die fighting at Troy. Peleus sent him away dressed as a girl and kept as a daughter to the king of Lycomedes on Scyros. The Greeks eventually found him in hiding after hearing that Troy could not be won with Achilles.
