The Missouri School Improvement Program (MSIP) is the state 's accountability system for evaluating and accrediting public school districts in Missouri. The foundation of MSIP is to prepare every child for success in school and life.. The requirements for MSIP will push school districts to make the changes they need to properly prepare students for a 21st century job. Since 1990 the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has defined learning standards so that all districts in Missouri could align local curriculum.
Some opponents may say that some graduated students cannot pass even high school exam and that is why we need to make a harder standard of the education system. However, high school students take tests what they study in last week or month, but the adults cannot pass the test because they finished school a long time ago and may have already forgotten a lot. According to the article “L.A. Unified retreats on higher graduation standards” by Howard Blume, “The Los Angeles Board of Education on Tuesday retreated from new, more rigorous graduation standards out of concern that huge numbers of students would fail to earn diplomas.” I totally agree with the author that is good idea retreated from highest standards so that more students can get diplomas.
Here at Frostburg State University, I am the Executive Vice President of a major organization on campus called the Black Student Alliance. Our organizations goal is, “To represent and address the needs of the African-American student body and to culturally enrich the campus the campus as a whole through programs and lectures.” This year alone we have gained over 50 active members, and have had a turnout of more than 70 members at every event. Attending a predominantly White institution would be very difficult if there were no cultural groups on campus.
Christian’s cheerful, friendly smile, kind heart and playful spirit make him well liked by his classmates and teacher alike. As a student, Christian has proven himself to be hard working, aiming to do what is expected of him. As it is not always easy for Christian to understand and follow directions without support, he works best when an assignment is broken down into small steps and modeled for him. It has been a pleasure to see Christian become more responsible with his homework assignments, making a conscious effort to make sure he has all of his materials and completing assignments on time. As it takes time for Christian to get himself organized, he is strongly encouraged to use his transition time between classes wisely, as he has a tendency to get distracted by his friends in the hallway, which causes him to be late to class or be unprepared with his materials.
David Brooks’ “Support Our Students” is an essay on the problem of low retention rates in higher education that I really wanted to support. As a community college student, it has been easy to see first-hand many of the problems Brooks has mentioned, from the need for childcare to the exhorbitant cost of textbooks. However, the essay, and idea, have two fatal flaws that lend it to reading more like a timed in-class essay for a community college final than as a legitimate critique of President Obama’s proposal to make community college tuition free. The critique ignores the very real problem of enrollment; that’s flaw one. Flaw two, Brooks’ own solutions are vague, unsupported, and lacking any kind of concrete evidence or sources.
Only reading and behavior are identified as needed goal areas leaving out other academic areas, such as math and writing. However, these building goals were refined based on student’s past performance data. Datnow and Park (2014) state student achievement goals are essential to the cycle of continuous improvement and can be specific and measurable but they do not outline the details for classroom instruction and differentiation needed for every student. To help all students achieve, teachers need to systematically and routinely use data to guide instructional decisions and meet students’ learning needs. Some of the teachers in my building do a great job of implementing this cycle and other’s do not.
SCI411 Academic and personal development Portfolio: Part 1 From not being in education for a few years, being able to recognise my own academic skills, strengths and weaknesses was quite difficult. However, over these first couple of weeks in lectures my learning strengths and weaknesses have made themselves apparent. Whilst filling out the questionnaire Skills Self-Assessment Audit (Theeducators, 2013) it took a lot of understanding of the questions to be able to answer honestly, and my lowest scores reflected this in the personal effectiveness category. Children who grow up in poverty are faced with a series of issues which impact their education and social atmosphere. In both the school and home setting these children lack the proper resources which they need to succeed academically. Across the country, people have begun creating programs which aim to help children in poverty succeed, despite their socioeconomic status. These programs range from after-school reading, tutoring services, charter schools, and free summer programs. All of these programs provide children with extra academic help which they may not be receiving in school or at home.

I incorporate this learned experience daily and learn through each success and discovered area of improvement. Addressing my students needs using a variety of assessment tools has been a beneficial practice to help guide instruction. Students have different learning styles and their strengths and weaknesses are not always apparent using the same methods of assessment. Utilizing formative, standards(goal)-based, anecdotal, observational and benchmarks has driven my instructional programs. The combination of different assessments provides me with a multi-dynamic perspective of my students allowing me to better understand their strengths, weakness and academic needs.
I would also like to provide continuous progress monitoring. Assessments like the Response to Intervention model (RTI) will better inform me of the student’s strengths and weaknesses.
