Roughly 1 in 15,000 people is being murdered every year in the United States. Serial is a podcast about a guy named Adnan Syed and a girl named Hae Min Lee, who disappeared, killed, and found dead in the forest on January 13, 1999. Adnan Syed is Hae’s ex-boyfriend who was accused of the homicide of Hae Min Lee and was locked up since then. Although fingers was pointed at him for Hae’s murder, he might still be innocent because there wasn’t enough evidence, they loved and cared for each other, and Adnan wasn’t with Hae after school that day. She explains how the investigators did not find any physical evidence because usually in a murder investigation, there has to be some physical evidence because it helps the investigators identify the killer of the victim. Even though some prints lead back to Adnan, it still doesn’t mean that those prints were from that day because Adnan has been dating Hae and Adnan probably touched Hae’s car. Hae Min Lee, Adnan’s ex-girlfriend, owned a diary. The diary has been investigated by the investigators, means that they looked through it, read it word for word. In her diary, Hae states, “I swear he’s the sweetest guy... I tried to act natural and unjealous, but it did kinda bother me. Ten seconds later, guess who danced with me, and not with Stephanie? Adnan! Now how can I not fall in love with this guy? Of course I gave him his first kiss on the lips, then I totally fell in love with him. Since then, I keep on falling deeper and deeper into him. The bad thing is we have to keep things secret, sigh. But it’s okay because love conquers all” (Ep. 2, p. 31). This shows that Adnan might really be innocent because he showed love and affection. He was supposed to dance with the prom princess, Stephanie, because it was a school tradition. Instead, he ditched Stephanie to dance with Hae and show his love for her. Usually, when a person owns a diary, they state their inner feelings that because they know that nobody will ever read it or find it. In addition, in episode 1, Adnan was talking to Sarah Koenig about how he feels about the accusation against him. Here he says, “No one ever has been able to provide any shred of evidence that I had anything but friendship toward her, like love and respect for her. That's at the end of the day, man. The only thing I can ever say is, man, I had no reason to kill her” (Ep.1, p.
