Impulsivity in Adolescents

“We met, we woo'd and made exchange of vow, I'll tell thee as we pass; but this I pray, That thou consent to marry us to-day.” (Shakespeare II. III. 60) Adolescents act impulsively in “Romeo and Juliet” because of the release of dopamine and the adolescent brain differs from adults. Teenagers make risky decisions everyday although there are many reasons for this. In Romeo and Juilet especially characters make absurd decisions without thinking through the consequences. In the play “Romeo and Juliet” the adolescents act extremely impulsive. These teenagers get married a day after meeting because instead of true love, they are attracted to each other. This relationship leads to many problems that decisively end their lives (IPL). This shows that the adolescents in this play take high risks without thinking out the consequences. According to The Science behind Adolescent risk taking “A surprising or unexpected reward causes an extra dopamine release. So every time we do something with an uncertain outcome—taking a “risk”—increased dopamine is released while we are determining what happens.” (UCLA). This can explain why teenagers are willing to take big risks for little rewards. For example in the play “Romeo and Juliet” Romeo acts very impulsive when he kills himself after thinking Juilet is dead. He does not think about what he is doing.
