World War II Revisionism
The Second World War was the largest, deadliest, and most costly war in history. It involved more than 100 million people from over 30 countries, making it the most widespread war as well. Over 50 million soldiers and civilians perished in World War II, while a comparable number of people were injured. The war began in 1939 and ended in 1945. This bloody conflict brought about major changes in technology and put the world leaps and bounds ahead of its previous state. It is important to understand the cause of a war of this magnitude. According to A. J. P. Taylor, author of Origins of the Second World War, Hitler had principles “which echo the conversation of any Austrian café or German beer-house.” Hitler’s beliefs at the time were considered the norm among the German citizens, and none of his actions or values were unique. Adolf Hitler was also an uncoordinated, non-systematic leader. This proves to be true if we examine his actions. His uncoordinated behavior was demonstrated when speaking to the council of ministers after Germany dropped out of the League of Nations and left the Disarmament conference, both in October 1933. These were some of the first steps toward a global conflict. The League of Nations was a coalition and forum designed to resolve international conflicts and decrease tension following World War One. The Disarmament conference was an effort by the League of Nations to increase the level of disarmament following the war. Addressing his council, Hitler said “threatening steps against Germany have neither materialised nor are they to be expected…The critical moment has probably passed” 2.
