The American Civil War
One of the main focuses in America’s history was the Civil war. The American Revolution created the United States; however, it was up to the Civil war to determine what kind of nation it will become. Will the United States be a dissolvable confederation of sovereign states or an indivisible nation with a sovereign national government? Would the United States continue to exist as the largest slaveholding country in the world, even though this nation, born of a declaration that all men were created with an equal right to liberty? Those are the two questions that were left unsolved following the revolution. The uncompromising differences between the free and slave states over the power of national government to forbid slavery in the territories that had not yet become states is what started the civil war. To solve this issue of slavery, a man named Stephen Douglas created the popular sovereignty. This was put in place to let the people vote. He believed it was the best way to solve the slavery problem. The civil war includes advantages and disadvantages of the North and South, great effects and a resolution. Dred Scott sued a Southerner for his freedom because he took him (a slave) over to the North to work. He could sue him for his freedom because the North was a free state. However, the supreme court says that Scott is not considered a prisoner; he is considered property, so in that case the supreme court has ruled against him. Southerners now came up with the idea of bringing their slaves over to the North because their would be no problems arising due to the Dred Scott Decision. They could bring their slaves to the North without the problem of getting sued or losing their slaves because now they know they are safe to do
