Nowadays, humans want more to satisfy their needs so they want more high quality animals or plants for food and other needs. Natural breeding of organisms is not good enough for human enjoyment. Therefore, people decide to have selective breeding on other organisms to achieve human needs. Selective breeding, which is also called artificial selection, means humans selecting desirable traits in a species and choosing which individuals breed in order to increase these traits in the species. It is a traditional method for improving crops and livestock. Compared with natural breeding, natural breeding happens naturally without human intervene. Sheep that were produced by selective breeding has the best traits that suit human needs. Sheep that are produced each time contain the same traits as the previous generation and can be produced in large amount. By selling their wool, milk or meat, they can earn more money and save time. Although selective breeding brings many benefits to human, at the same time, it has caused many adverse effects to those animals. From the moral and ethical perspective, sheep already has lots of wool but human used selective breeding to produce sheep with more wool. With so much wool, sheep will be overheated easily. This shows that human did not consider sheep’s feeling, they just want to earn more money. Besides, this may not be as effective as human thought, as overheating may lead to death. From the cultural perspective, as most of the sheep has been produced by selective breeding, they lost their original characteristics and culture. Sheep from different places become identical. For example, if there is a type of sheep that can only be found in a country, but the sheep keepers thought that kind of sheep cannot earn a huge profit, so they stop to raise that type of sheep and they choose to raise another type of sheep that can earn more money. As a result, that country will lose a unique culture. To conclude, sheep is just one of the example of selective breeding, there are many other types of animal being selectively
