As a child I have always been intrigued by the question “What forms a society”, or more specifically: “Why is it that we need to follow the standards of society?” Every day we are taught to conform to society’s norms and follow the same path as everybody else, but simply because everybody is following it does not necessarily mean that it is the best or the correct way of living. Societal norms do have their advantages seeing that they help manage the community and aim to organize groups of people together. Societal norms can also help ease communication and understanding between people since there is a way to do everything by everyone and most events and actions are predictable. Expressing one’s own personality is a vital part in enjoying life, but unfortunately society has shaped our minds and taught us the ‘right’ way of appearing. For example, tattooed people are usually perceived to be dangerous or bad people, whereas in reality they just enjoy art on their body and use it as a form of self-expression. Another example is those ‘freaks’ that wear unusual outfits that are designed by designers that possess unique tastes. Some celebrities have shown great appreciation towards this trend such as Lady Gaga, Kanye West, and Miley Cyrus. Despite the negative reactions, people persist on their style to make their point of self-expression, which at times can be considered to be rebellious. Some of the world’s greatest geniuses have all been thought to be slightly crazy or out of the ordinary at some point in their life, because we humans tend to enjoy being in the comfort zone, while only the brave decide to step out of it and happen to make a great change in this world. In reality getting out of the comfort zone is all about having belief in one’s “self-expression” and being able to show the world what true creativity can
