Advantages Of White Privilege In American Society

White privilege is very real in America. Though certain ethnic groups of white people have been disadvantaged in American history such as Irish Americans, white people currently possess advantages in American society when compared to people of color or non-white people. These advantages can be seen in the amount representation in the government and mass media. They can also be seen in our own day-to-day interactions. These privileges can stem from the fact that white people are still a dominant group in American society.

White privilege is not having to further elaborate where you are from when asked. Simply answering that you are from Massachusetts, Florida, or any other state isn't enough to satisfy someone when you aren't white. "No I mean where are you really from?" usually follows your answer. Rather than accepting that you are American, you are minimized to your ethnic heritage. This experience is similar to Michelle Lopez-Mullins's, which is described in the textbook. Do any of you truly think that a stereotyped white man will ever be used as a sports mascot? Never will a white person have to worry about their ethnic heritage getting butchered thanks to a lack of understanding through cringe-worthy Halloween costumes and stereotypical television roles. Many actors of color have faced the obstacle of type-casting and have been subjected to playing flat, non-white characters that only exist to portray stereotypes.
Historically, white privilege has reigned supreme in America. Unlike Native Americans, white people never had to wait for suffrage laws to give them a voice. White people also have never been directly targeted by immigration laws such as during the Chinese Exclusionary
