In many novels, plays, and anything of literature, comes many themes. One of these themes being triumphing over adversity, which is apparent in Life of Pi, Hamlet, and The Great Gatsby. When adversity arises, people are faced with a decision to make. Every novel just listed contains many examples of this theme, as in Pi’s fight for survival out at sea and survives, and in Hamlet when Hamlet’s father is murdered and the ghost of his father tells him to seek revenge on his father’s killer, Claudius, which in the end Hamlet achieves by proving Claudius’s guilt in Act 3, during the play. Lastly, in The Great Gatsby an example of this theme would be Gatsby’s haunting past, so he works and becomes wealthy so that he can be what she really wants.
Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart illustrates different struggles that each character faces, and how each struggle leads them to grow. Achebe exemplifies how one gains courage as a result of this. There are obstacles that one faces everyday, whether it be an internal conflict or something as radical as war. These adversities are not easy to come by, and one can’t just forget about it.

Adversity is something that I have faced my entire life. Ever since I have found out about my brother’s autism I have dealt with adversity, though it has taught me a lot. The first lesson I got from adversity is that I have to be mature and use common sense no matter how old I was. Being with my brother has given me responsibilities that most kids don’t have to deal with and these responsibilities make me act beyond my age so that I can love and take care of my brother to the best of my abilities. A second life lesson I have gotten from adversity is that I’m best at being myself.
