The Toilet Paper Puppy What is the first thing you think about when you see a fuzzy, small Labrador puppy sleeping? Maybe you think about how soft and cute it looks. Or, maybe you think about how you would like to add a puppy to your family. What else is soft and comfortable? Kleenex Cottonelle toilet paper! In the company’s advertisement, a small, white Labrador puppy is centered, sleeping on an undone, messy role of soft toilet paper. The puppy looks content and very comfortable laying on top of bundle of toilet paper. The Kleenex Cottonelle company instantly attracts viewers and effectively presents their toilet paper to all consumers as being soft and plush through the use of pathos, colors, ethos and word play. The company used the pun “Lab tested for cushiony softness”-located on the top of the advertisement. This play on words can portray two possible scenarios. The customer can either believe that the toilet paper was tested in a laboratory, or that the “Lab” puppy tested the product for its “cushiony softness”- which is shown in the ad. Having the puppy testing the product in the ad displays that the puppy “approves” of the softness of the toilet paper and builds the company’s credibility of their product. The use of ethos and word play in the advertisement helps to attract customers so they know that their product is legitimate. Usually before consumers purchase something, they want to make sure that the product is really going to work and be worth their money. The play on words helps the company’s ethos and appeals to consumers. Even more, the puppy being asleep on the toilet paper shows that the toilet paper really must be comfortable. The puppy enjoying the plush paper further exemplifies that it will be worth it to the consumer to buy the toilet
