“United we stand and divided we fall.” This famous quote from John Dickens during the revolutionary war really rained true during WWII. It was a time when every single person in the country had to sacrifice and be involved. It was a time like the world had never seen and there was no hiding from it. The world was under threat and the US needed everyone to unite if they were going to win. The country not only needed people for the military but to also fill the roles back home like factory workers. Discrimination was a considerable issue in the country at that time and many people were scared that these issues would hurt the war effort. The country needed full support for the war and the African American community was a large portion of that. The poster was also printed to help with the racial issues in America. Discrimination was very abundant at that time and the country couldn’t afford to have issues on its own soil. This poster and many like it really tried to capture African Americans roles and highlights in the war effort. Discrimination and intolerance affected more than just the African American community but a large portion of the country. It really relied on emotion to get its message to the audience. The poster is very patriotic and it is intended to bring out the patriot in everyone. This is a time when the American people were prouder of the country than ever before. Patriotism was high in the world and the poster really relied on that. A very large American flag takes up almost the background. This not only catches the readers eye but puts a strong and powerful feeling out. The poster shows two young males working on an airplane. They chose one black male and one white male. This gave the look that the country strong and united. Having two fit young men created a robust imagine and makes the impression that the country has no weakness. It showed them working hand in hand and sent the message that the military doesn’t discriminate and everyone can have an important role in the war effort. The airplane the men are working on really represents Americas power as a country and the strength of our military. This made the reader proud and wanting to help. People wanted to work on machines and weapons they saw on these posters. The poster probably wouldn’t have been nearly as affective if they showed them working in a soup kitchen or scrubbing the floors which is where most African Americans were
