During the 19th century, black men did not have equal rights with white men because of discrimination and unfairness. By 1860 African Americans had unequal rights because they had minimal social rights compared to white men like not being able to go to school with white boys and not being able to eat at public restaurants. African Americans also had little political rights such as not being able to be a witness in court, holding public office, and only four states allowed African Americans to vote. According to Charles Mackay, “Life and Liberty in America, society was very segregated, and even free African Americans were often restricted from eating in public restaurants. Going to theaters, concerts, or getting any job they wanted. White men did not allow the African Americans to become close to them because they were the better race and the African Americans were “inferior”. This evidence proves that even free African Americans were restricted from many things that other white men would be able to do. They were treated almost the same as the enslaved African Americans. The author argues that he believed that African Americans should not be enslaved but saw that they wouldn't want to associate with black men. He felt like the African Americans were being mistreated and that they were being treated like they were below the white men. This source was from Charles Mackay's journey in the north and saw all of this racial inequality. Evidence from “The American Anti-Slavery Society” shows that schools in the 1800s were segregated between the races and that they were not allowed the same level of education as white boys.
