A way of life in the south was slavery which was also known as the "peculiar Institution. Slavery was terrible for the African-Americans who were beaten and treated in the worst way. The slaves had a life which had Resistance and survival. They would start the resistance would end up small like breaking the working tools or other stuff, but the bigger Resistance like the Nat Turner Resistance ended up killing the slave owners but later in their savage fight back against slavery Nat Turner was hung and killed by a slave owner. They were in constant fear because the slave would get auctioned off to the highest buyer and go to a different farm leaving everything behind. The slaved people had very few legal rights. In the years of 1830 and 1860 the slavery got worse for the slaves due to the cause of the slave codes which was "the laws in the Southern states that controlled enslaved people" (page 434) which became severe. Initially the slave codes were written to prevent the event known as the slave rebellion which was a way for the slaves to get back at their slave owners. So basically, the slave codes were a way for the slave owners to be safe against the slaves. The slave owners would have been in great danger if the slave codes were never invented. The Rebellions are the way that the slaves rebel openly against their masters. They would start little by breaking tools but then it would turn big by violence and end up possibly killing their slave owner. One of the biggest Rebellions was led by a slave named Nat Turner. Nat Turner was a self-taught slave who taught himself to read and write. He led a violent rampage in "Southhampton County, Virginia, that resulted in the death of at least 55 whites" (page 435). He was eventually hung by a white man but forever his rebellion that he had started frightened the whites and which led to more slave
