The ADKN (or Aga Khan Development Network) is an NGO that is organized into different agencies that accomplish different needs. These include FOCUS, AKA, AKAM, AKES, AKF (Canadian chapter AKFC), AKFED, AKHS, AKPBS, AKTC, AKU, AND UCA. These agencies cover the different fundamentals of helping a third-world country, from education to culture. The one that has the most effects on Canada is the AKFC, or Aga Khan Foundation Canada.

The ADKN uses the values of Islam to guide its decisions. This does not mean that the AKDN only works for the Ismaili community. In reality, the AKDN helps all people in the third-world, regardless of race, origin, or religion. They simply use the ethical values of Islam to make decisions. The AKDN also tries to, in countries that have a high Muslim presence, to broaden the understanding of their cultural heritage.

The goal of the AKDN as a whole is to help third-world countries lift themselves out of poverty and to help create opportunity for all of those residing within. The AKDN works in many countries, and asks for the help of developed nations to take care of their neighbours across oceans. Its main area of focus is the poorest parts of Asia and Africa.

The AKDN works in many different areas, but for example, one could look at the AKTC, or Aga Khan Trust for Culture. The AKTC looks to revitalize and revive the economic, social, and cultural aspects of countries. For example, the AKTC transformed the garbage pit in Darassa, Cairo, Egypt, to the Al-Azhar park, to give those living in the poor area of Darb al-Ahmar a chance for a better life.
