A) Against All Odds, Family Life on a Low Income in Ireland by Mary Daly and Madeleine Leonard is this the book which is to be reviewed in this report.
B) Against all Odds is a book which deals strongly with the topic of poverty in both urban and rural areas, lone parent or two parent families working and non-working throughout Ireland and the great affect it has on the 30 families which participated in the study. The families which were chosen were done so in order to reflect the wide range of circumstances which face families in Ireland today in regards to poverty, however it is seen that 59% of these families are experiencing ‘relative income poverty’. Chapter two continues on with the recurring theme which is finances and how they are managed in order to make ends meet. The third chapter of this book is really where we begin to gain knowledge of first hand situations as the author deals with peoples’ everyday lives in their own words. Chapter four looks solely at how the lives of adults are affected on low income. The main theme which is to emerge is that of health and the chapter ends with a look into people’s aspirations and thoughts into their own futures and the futures of their children. Chapters five and six deal with very much the same subject matter as each other and take a direct look into the lives of children within these families and the situations which they have to deal with on an everyday basis in order to be seen on and equal level with those around them. In the second last chapter we return to the point of view of an adult and look at the policies from their point of view. It looks at such this things as social welfare allowances and the massive role which they play in today’s society. The book ends in
