Should our age defy who we are and want to become? Do we get stereotyped, in today’s society based on appearance? Ageism is discrimination towards a certain age group, but I strongly believe elderly and millennials are the ones who are currently getting most impacted upon. Ageism is the harshest type of discrimination occurring in today’s civilization, as it takes place everywhere such as our society, workplace and on a daily basis no matter race, gender, ethnicity, or wealth. It impacts individuals self perceptions of by having low self esteem and confidence about themselves and creates a negative and unstable environment for all, as all the stereotypes takeover one’s personality. Ageism involves applying false stereotypes to a certain group as evidenced by changing the way one treats other people based on their age. Nonetheless, we are unfortunately ingrained with faulty stereotypes about different age groups, which is still being grown through social media, tv or media in youth. The problem lies in the fact, that unfortunately most of society has been lead to believe in the elderly people as constantly being characterized as old fashioned, disabled, slow, and self restraint. While younger youth are constantly being characterized as dangerous, immature, reckless and troubled. However, many of these stereotypes are false. When people think of you as disabled, inactive, boring, immature or irresponsible, it really puts a toll on your self perception as you may really start to believe it. For instance, lots of young adults are very mature who are making achievable goals, plans, and preparation to working towards their future. Some examples of an unstable or unsafe environment include, mistrust, in thinking that the elders are outdated or expired and how young people are in behaved. Regardless.
