Women as Perpetrators: Female killers; The cases of Aileen Wuornos, Beverley Allitt, and Gypsy Rose Blanchard.

Female serial killers do not date back very far compared to male serial killers. The first widely recognized female serial killer was Lavinia Fisher whose crimes were committed in the early 1800s. She and her husband John Fisher lived near Charleston, South Carolina, and owned a hotel called Mile Six Wayfarer House. Lavinia used her beauty and charm to lure lone traveling men to the hotel. She was eventually caught by the police with help from Tyria Moore. The police worked with Moore in order to get a confession from Aileen in exchange for immunity. Aileen Wuornos was arrested on January 9th, 1991 at the Last Resort Biker Bar in Volusia County, Florida. She claimed that the men raped her and that is why she murdered them, but later on, retracted her statement. She was found guilty and was charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery with a deadly weapon, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. She was sentenced to death by lethal injection. On October 9th, 2002, Aileen Wournos was executed by lethal injection at Florida State Prison. When Allitt would not get the reaction and sympathy that she wanted from others, she would hurt herself and others. She later went on to train to be a nurse. She was often absent because of illnesses that she claimed she had. She also failed most nursing exams because of her absence and her lack of attention. Even though she was not a good student, she was given a six-month contract at a very understaffed hospital called Grantham and Kesteven Hospital in 1991. She was placed to work in the children's ward where she was often the only nurse for the night
