This chapter was very fascinating because it depicts children play/talk about stories. Akemi was the only little girl that talked about monster, she depicted a story about monsters. Her story actually depicted a monster, generally little girls stories do not contain monsters doing vicious things. As the chapter continued it talked about different stories little girls told about monsters. Deana’s story of a giant did not make the giant scary, but depicted him as a thief. Little girls generally tell stories and by the end of their story they end up saying there is no such things as monster, while little boys story’s revolve around the monster. The teacher asked the class if everyone in the class had a turn and one boy put his hand in the air even though he had a turn. The teacher knew he had already went, but in the eyes of the students they may have thought he did not get a proper turn. Later in the chapter, Eddie talks about a time he mad a mess and told his father it was on accident, but it was a lie to cover up the truth. The conversation caused the teacher to ask the student’s to do a skit, Wally had to hide a picture somewhere in the room. Wally hid the picture and when the class came back together the teacher asked where the picture went. Wally said it was in his cubby, then he added a lie to protect himself. Later that day honesty was brought up again. Someone poured water on the sand and all of the students denied it, each student was protecting themselves from getting in trouble.“Anger from an adult and perhaps the fear of punishment make a child weak”(139). Eddie continued to lie, he watered the lima beans but stated he had not watered the lima beans The teacher continued to explore the children’s honesty with a new role playing skit. The scenario was the parent told the child not to touch the glass animals while she was shopping. The child touched the glass animals and broke the animal, the students discussed what they should do.
