Alcatraz, the prison for prisons, was known for being strict and somewhere no one wanted to be sent. It opened for around thirty years and held some of the most famous criminals including Alvin Karpis, Al Capone, and George “Machine-Gun” Kelly (“BOP” 2-4). It was on an island in San Francisco Bay and is one of the most famous prisons in the United States of America. It was known for having a very strict schedule and no one could ever escape. Even now people still visit and it is a constant tourist attraction. Alcatraz prison contains a diverse history and was one of the most well-known prisons that held famous inmates and the buildings still stand today.

The public was very interested when he went to prison and his time there was very public, especially in the newspapers. Al Capone was known for finding ways to get what he wanted in prisons. This included convincing guards to help him. Al Capone started committing crimes at a young age and by the time he was twenty, he was making around one hundred thousand dollars per week. He also owned a nightclub called The Four Deuces. Even though he was committing crimes, he was very public in doing good work like working at soup kitchens and helping the city’s children. The government was embarrassed and tried to stop him. They even set the buildings of his businesses on fire. The public turned their backs on him when they found out a possible murder plan for a local prosecutor, possibly led by him. Capone hid for three months after being possibly convicted, but once they found him, they did not have enough evidence to prove he was guilty. The public was very disappointed with this information. Al Capone had become one of the most powerful people in Chicago and by 1929, Capone had made sixty-two million dollars. Al Capone had an enemy named George “Bugs” Moran. It was said Capone was planning to kill Bugs’ entire gang, starting from the bottom and working their way until they got to Bugs. The mass murder became one of the most famous in history. It soon became known as the St. Valentine’s Day massacre because it all took place on February 14. The massacre became known nationwide and Capone became very famous. Now Al Capone was known by everyone as a multimillionaire, high-class gangster. A man named Andrew Mellon found evidence of Capone’s multiple crimes and it took around five years until Capone was convicted of all his crimes. He was sentenced to eleven years in prison with a fifty thousand dollar fine and court fees that were over thirty thousand. When Capone went to prison he used his skills
