“For That He Looked Not Upon Her”, written by the sixteenth century English poet George Gascoigne, displays a complex attitude of sorrow and almost depression, which is developed through the form, diction, and imagery of the poem. This poem is written in the form of an English sonnet. It follows the “ABAB” rhyme scheme, uses iambic pentameter, and concludes with a rhyming couplet. The speaker explains that he “takes no delight” (Line 3) in looking at his lover anymore; the standard form used helps to support the speaker’s argument.
When one considers rhetorical devices used in his letter, he uses imagery, sensory, and biblical allusions to bring together his letter to touch the hearts of many and change the
In both 'Storm on the Island' by Seamus Heaney and 'Ozymandias' by Percy Bysshe Shelley, the power of nature is a central theme. Despite the contrasting contexts and settings of the two poems, both poets explore the immense force of nature and its ability to challenge human power and dominance. This essay will analyze and compare how these poets present the power of nature in their respective works, considering the use of language, imagery, and structure to convey their ideas. The poem 'Storm on the Island' by Heaney portrays the might of nature as a formidable and perilous force. The setting of the poem is on a remote island where the inhabitants are bracing themselves for an impending storm.
In the poem “An Echo Sonnet,” Robert Pack introduces a narrator and an alter ego who exchanges questions and answers that show Pack’s questions and attitudes towards life. The narrator is portrayed as a timid man who is afraid to dive into the unknown. He fears what will come of his future life and the consequences of mortality. The “echo” which is the speakers alter ego, answers the voices questions in a way that gives the voice a certain outlook on life. Pack utilizes a traditional form of Shakespearian sonnet with the addition of the “echo” which enable the reader to receive a clearer message.
In his poem “an Echo Sonnet, To an Empty Page” poet Robert Pack introduces a narrator and his alter ego who exchange questions and answers that subsequently reveals the poet’s prospects and attitudes toward life. The narrator, or “the voice,” seems like a timid man who is afraid to plunge into his own life, because he fears the future and inevitable consequences of his mortality. The “echo,” which is the narrator’s alter ego, or a persona, answers the the voice’s questions in a way that drive the voice to take a certain prospect in life. Pack designed the poem masterfully in a way that it utilizes the traditional form of a shakespearean sonnet and an addendum of on “echo,” which communicates a cleaner and more direct message to the readers. Furthermore various literary techniques such as symbols, extraposition, and imagery add to the meaning of the poem Through form and literary techniques, Robert Pack emphasizes, through the answers of the “echo,” that no matter how frightening life seems to be, it is important to take a “leap.”
The narrator’s changing understanding of the inevitability of death across the two sections of the poem illustrates the dynamic and contrasting nature of the human
The poem “Miniver Cheevy,” is about a man who spends his days wishing that he had been born in a different era than the one he spends his days in. Looking back on the olden days Miniver Cheevy feels that the olden days were much better than modern times and the poem goes on to show his love for the past. However, instead of doing something about his love and curiosity for the past he chooses to reminisce about the past and drink his misery away. Throughout this paper I will discuss the poem’s central purpose and its attitude towards its subject matter, and how the author uses allusion to reinforce the poems central purpose and attitude. First, I will begin with the poem central purpose or theme.
David Goggins is a former US Navy SEAL who is now a famous motivational speaker, author, podcast guest, and long-distance runner. Goggins wrote this book, which is an autobiography of his life experiences, to give the reader a sense of power and control over their mind. Goggins pushes this idea of “Mind over Matter” throughout the book and highlights his life experience as a guide to the readers who may be in tough or almost impossible situations to ignore what feels good in the moment and do what will be better for their future. I chose this book because I have heard from multiple people who have read it before that it is a great read and will really change your perspective on life. Goggins provides a fair point of view from an experienced
The reason it expresses emotionalism is because he is trying to get the listeners, who are sinners, to think that God will drop them into hell at any given moment. The quotation for this

The Battlegrounds of Emotion Hannah Correa English II Honors Ms. Doyle 1 March 2024 In the American Civil War, more than 600,000 people died, which is a greater number than those who died in WWI and WWII combined (Mintz). Andersonville (the Confederacy’s prison for the Yankhees) alone killed 25,000 young men in the first three months of 1864 (McElroy 646). The American Civil War represents just one of the tragic wars that have cut a bloody gash through the history of mankind. Such conflicts frequently beg the question:
The moves and plots, which produce different fields of understanding, should arise from the nature of scripture. There are moments in consciousness termed immediacy, reflection, and praxis. Symbol’s task in consciousness is in different ways. Since scripture functions in these different ways, sermons also are plotted to work in human consciousness to shift congregational consciousness.
Now that we know 100 year old men and women are more common than most people realize, why is it such a stretch to think Immortality is a possibility. Why do most people won't even consider the possibility? In short, we have been conditioned to think otherwise. By reading Albert Pike and Elphas Levi, I have come to understand that Immortality is not only a possibility, but a reality; a topic I will be discussing in upcoming blog postings. I have learned that Immortals live among us, but they hid their identity and even fake their deaths for fear of persecution.
In this poem Henry Longfellow describes a seaside scene in which dawn overcomes darkness, thus relating to the rising of society after the hardships of battle. The reader can also see feelings, emotions, and imagination take priority over logic and facts. Bridging the Romantic Era and the Realism Era is the Transcendental Era. This era is unusual due to it’s overlapping of both the Romantic and Realism Era. Due to its coexistence in two eras, this division serves as a platform for authors to attempt to establish a new literary culture aside from the rest of the world.
