On that fateful night, when Ali and I were sitting in our mud hut and I could hear his ragged breathing, I knew that I had to tell him what happened. I don’t, however, know how to tell him. I decided after some thinking that I would wait until the morning and tell him while we have our breakfast in the morning.
In the morning I woke up, like usually, by the draft of wind that was let in by Ali opening the window. I got up and got dressed, constantly thinking about how I could tell Ali what happened and how, and why Amir hasn’t done anything. Then I remembered, that Ali asked me every breakfast what happened, and I decided that this is exactly the moment I had waited for. The whole time, Ali looked like he might explode and tear up Amir, though at the end I managed to convince him that we should not punish him.
