A mother. An aunt. A widower. A lover. A woman with a highly prestigious title and power in her hands. Her name is Gertrude, the mother of Hamlet that she loves dearly. Throughout the play, she is a suspect of being involved in the murder of King Hamlet and obtaining the power she never had. Even though Shakespeare describes women as weak/minor than men. Despite the fact that Gertrude had very little lines in the play, she had a huge impact on the action of the play. The ghost talks privately to Hamlet about his mother and the real murderer of his death. For instance, the ghost explains to Hamlet how she was seduced, “Ay, that incestuous, that adulterate beast, With witchcraft of his wit, with traitorous gifts⎯ O wicked wit and gifts, that have power”(Ⅰ.ⅴ.41-44). This reveals how Gertrude is easily manipulated by the gifts and the “love” that Claudius had in store for her. Also about the unfaithfulness and adultery that Gertrude committed. Moreover, the ghost states Gertrude’s sexuality, “So lust, though to a radiant angel linked, Will sate itself in a celestial bed And prey on garbage”(I.v.55-57). The ghost describes Gertrude as a lustful character as the cause of marriage to his brother. Gertrude’s sexual relationship with Claudius gives the audience as sexually active individual. However, Gertrude says nothing nor deny the statements of the ghost. Gertrude was different compared to Hamlet due to her actions in the play. Hamlet viewed his mother as woman that jumps from man to man. In the famous soliloquy, Hamlet states “Frailty, thy name is woman!”(I.ii.146). Hamlet views all womankind as disloyal and frail in the character. He also describes his mother as a tramp and disgusts of his mother marries Claudius.
