The poem uses metaphors and imagery to create a sense of hope and of suffering. The poem focuses on how the journey will be painful, but the traveler will never be alone. The opening line immediately draws the reader in with its imagery of suffering and doom. The metaphor for the traveling of life is easy to see in Jane’s life. Throughout the story Jane endures many “moonless and dreary” (line 2) days; these times Jane’s sense of independence can truly be seen. She stays true to her faith and to herself. The poem constantly uses metaphors to reiterate how the way will be hard “should I fall o’er the broken bridge passing” (Line 13).
