This amazing story takes place in LA California and in Mexico City. Luis was born in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, he lived there until he was two years old, finally later moving to Los Angeles, California. Luis’ parents worked in the Mexican school; his father as the principal of the school and his mother as the secretary of the principal. Luis attends school, treated like something unusual as the teachers have no idea how to handle a Mexican boy who can’t speak the English language.

People use these addictions to escape the world they live in, similarly to the way Case has a dependency on drugs. This type of dependency is usually started because people have the feeling of emptiness and are struggling with this feeling, looking for an easy way to feel better. Case was given the opportunity to escape his addiction, but instead Case states, “Thanks, but I was enjoying that dependency” (45). He enjoyed his dependency on drugs and alcohol because it was a form of an escape from his body, a chance to forget about his body slowly deteriorating. As Case gradually weakens he continues to abuse stimulants to help with the loss of energy.
Gabriella Montez’s primary stereotype is the “nerd.” The first time Gabriella is seen, she is reading a book. This is a common indication used throughout the film industry that leads viewers to make the assumption that the character in question is introverted and intelligent. When Gabriella transfers to a new school, it is made clear that she is in fact academically talented. She is referred to as a “freaky genius girl” and “an Einsteinette.”
