Women in the 1930’s Who were some of the women in the 1930’s who’s actions influenced people? One was Amelia Earhart, Amelia did several transcontinental and extended flights in an autogiro. One of her travels was from Newfoundland to Ireland which gave her the title of the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. This flight took a little under 15 hours and all she had with her was a toothbrush, $15 cash and a flying suit. This brought her worldwide fame. Even President Hoover had something to say about her. He said that she, “demonstrated the new possibilities of the human spirit...in overcoming the barriers of space.” Amelia replied with this, “ I shall be happy if my small exploit has drawn attention to the fact the women too are flying.” …show more content…

She was the first to accomplish this feat. Along with flying, she also did counseling to women at Purdue University for part of the year 1935-36. She wanted them to take advantage of the opportunities around them and become more independent women. Her last flight was on a new plain a Lockheed Electra which she decided to use it to go all the way around the world at the equator. She was going to go from east to west starting in Oakland. Amelia and her navigator Fred Noonan left Oakland on March 17,1937 after 16 hours of flying they were in Hawaii. Through the plane just a few days later experienced mechanical difficulties and had to wait almost two months for repairs. Earhart then decided to reverse her plans and fly in the opposite direction. On June 1,1937 they left Miami and headed west but began to experience rough weather. On July 2, 1937 two stops before completing this historical journey the two disappeared into the Pacific never to be seen again.
