America. The land of the free. Of the equal. This was not always a true statement. While America claimed that all people were equal, black men and women were working for white families all over the place.
Harper Lee and Truman Capote are widely known for their literary works, and both have significantly impacted the success of the other. Sadly, bitterness and rivalry created tension within Lee and Capote’s friendship (Alter). According to “Harper Lee and Truman Capote: A Collaboration in Mischief” by Alexandra Alter, Capote was jealous of Lee’s success, while Lee was offended when Capote did not acknowledge her contribution to his novel In Cold Blood. Thus, the two became distant. June Woo and Waverly Jong, from The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, have a strained relationship similar to that of Harper Lee and Truman Capote.
Land of the free and home of the brave. America is a country that is known for its freedom worldwide. Many abandoned their own country in order to try and live a perfect life in America, where they will not be discriminated against no matter what nationality, sex or religion an individual is. America was not always this promising to minorities mid 1800’s. America had huge faults such as slavery which later was one of the reasons the north and south separated and went to war with each other.
Within the early revolutionary epoch of American history brought various interpretations of the country. Thomas Paine characterized this country in an excerpt from his work the Rights of Man. Unfortunately, Thomas Paine’s characterization of America does not entirely hold truth today, and can be evident in our country’s political and identity ideologies. The key points within the excerpt implies that America is a country where a multitude of cultures, religions, and languages coexist. Paine suggests that our government, which was created “on the principles of society and the rights of man”, is able to overcome the differences of political and racial beliefs.
People have a lot of freedom to do what they want, everybody is treated equally, most people get justice for crimes. The United States is a nation built upon law, democracy, and principles derived from rights. Like anything man-made, there are flaws to be found in this nation, yet also strengths. Since the very first days of the Declaration of Independence’s effects on the colonies to the modern era we live in today, these successes and failures have defined society’s standards. While recently the United States has moved closer to the ideals of the Social Contract and Natural Rights, it has also moved further from the guiding Rule of Law.
America’s society has some distinctive characteristics that separate it from that of the rest of the world. Although diverse, the American society is unified in the number of traits that they all share. All American citizens value their individuality as well as their equality. Americans are not afraid to voice their opinions or to oppose something that they disagree with. If there is something that is not right, Americans will not hesitate to work towards positive change of that cause.
The United States is no Longer Following a Democracy A democracy is a form of government in which the people decide important matters and problems. Is the United States following this definition of democracy? The answer is no.
.America is the land of opportunity to many individuals. It gives people a chance to become who they really desire to be. That idea though, is not always true. What sometimes occurs is that people who want to become a true American make themselves believe that the only way to do so is by becoming powerful and losing the morals that they were taught. What has been ingrained in much of society is that if one does not do one of those things they are lesser than the ones who do.
The United States of America, is known to be one of the richest and most powerful countries in the world. It has often been referred to by many as a global melting pot or as locals may say callaloo, due to the amassing of diverse ethnicities, cultures and nationalities. Within its borders, resides immigrants or descendants of immigrants from almost every region in the world, and each has in some way added to the American culture and way of life. America is known for its stance on freedom, it is a nation that values equality and justice, this can be noted in the last few words of their national anthem ‘indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.’ However, for many, high levels of economic and social inequalities are daily struggles, a battle that has been fought for decades to claim the most basic rights, in the pursuit of achieving the American Dream.
The United States of America is not truly a democracy. America’s government is all over the place and pretty much a mixture of everything, it never has been just democracy. The characteristics of a democracy are where the majority wins but that never really happens. For example the president election majority does not elect the president. The United States of America is not a democracy for many reasons; Rule by law, we are more a republic than a democracy, and the founders of a nation didn 't want a democracy.
America is the place that seems to give opportunities and equal changes to all. They have more freedom than others (but not total freedom). America is a united people working together. I believe America is a place where all people have a chance to succeed in life. I also believe that in America people have the freedom to stand up for their beliefs and fight for them.
America provides a safe haven for people when their own nation can no longer protect them, citizens can practice their religions freely without persecution, and social equality has been achieved that is more successful than any other society. On the other hand, America is responsible for the death of hundreds of thousands of infants a year via abortion, we lead the world in incarcerated citizens per capita, and views that go against the status quo are consistently shot down with hatred.
