America, Russia and the Cold War, 1945-2006 by Walter LaFeber gives an extensive look into the Cold War through the United States. Throughout the entirety of the Cold War many things progressively changed, while other stayed somewhat the same. After fighting a long and drawn out battle against the Cold War and the Soviet Union, America saw many changes. As Cold War went on foreign policies changed, the way people thought about the Cold War changed, and the fight of the Cold War changed. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the United States found themselves different war with the Middle East.

During this time period the United States faced many things. They dealt with spies, and being accused of being a spy, to the Vietnam War, and the tragic deaths that came along with the fight. People during the beginning of this time period lived in fear. They were living in a time were McCarthyism was a large part of the American people’s lives. Though McCarthyism was short lived, the Cold War continued between the United States and Russia. Since the United States main fight was to contain communism and to not let it take over all of Asia it led to the Korean and Vietnam wars. These wars were to help stop the spread communism. During the Vietnam War many people had relied on being superior with nuclear power, an unchallenged economy, strong alliances, and a trusted president to direct power towards the Soviet Union, but in the 1970s the Russians were able to gain to gain equality of nuclear power.
