The world is an ugly place filled with beautiful people, but young girls think that it’s the other way around. All around the world young girls are pressured to look like their role models; tall, thin and blonde. It’s impossible for girls to achieve this, because even the models don’t look like the girl in the magazine. According to the documentary America the Beautiful, every magazine photo is retouched and altered until it’s “perfect”. This includes photoshop and intense body makeup. What some people don’t know is that the women in the magazine don’t even look like themselves. If we create more diverse and body positive society, we can help young girls get a better impression of what beauty is. A photographer in the film admitted that every photo is altered and retouched until it’s perfect. Since many girls read magazines and see advertisements, they are led to believe that that is what they should look like. When young girls see these fake women they hold themselves to unattainable standards, which is detrimental to their mental health. These standards cause girls to do anything they can to look like the women in magazines. This includes developing eating disorders, plastic surgery and buying a surplus of cosmetics. Since unrealistic advertisements are still prominent in this society, companies should put out body positive ads. Instead of titles like “how to lose twenty pounds in two weeks” and “how to get rid of cellulite” companies should write titles like “how to love your body” and “how to love your cellulite.” Companies should also have different models that actually look like average women of all shapes, sizes and colors. When you only see one type of woman you assume that that's what is beautiful and that people only like that type of person. Body positive ads and more diversity would greatly help people that think that the only type of beautiful is thin, tall and
