Since I did not live in the United States my whole life, I am not very aware to American culture, and I did not know too much about American Bandstand before this course. However, with the development of YouTube, I knew and watched clips of American Idol before. Not only in United States, but also in South Korea, there is a program like American Idol, so I think that is why I can relate American Idol to the television programs in South Korea.
It was interesting to read the perspective of how Americans think about American Bandstand. Clearly from what I read from Katelyn’s essay, American Bandstand was more for teenagers, but American Idol is for everyone. I realised how when American Bandstand was on air, it was mostly teenagers who was influenced and it was only famous among teenagers. However, American Idol influenced variety of generations. A lot of people were influenced, even people who were in 60s knew and listened to the American Idol. This simply amazed me.
As I mentioned on the essay, there is a South Korean television program called Kpop Star. It is pretty much American Idol, too. The effect was similar to the American Idol, a lot of participants made up their new songs or changed the original songs, so a lot of people were affected by it. The Korean music industry was not in a good state, the songs had too much electronic sounds with meaningless lyrics. People were just getting too tired and sick of it.
